A Baptist minister who played with Isaac Hayes and the 1970s soul-funk band 24-Carat Black, Chicagoan Bruce Thompson learned piano as a child from Ralph Jones, who played organ for Mahalia Jackson. The multi-talented Thompson also played Hammond B3 organ, was a bandleader and arranger, and formed the vocal group Bruce Thompson and the Black Roses, with Teela Owens and Precious Jewel Taylor.
